Introduction to ski touring
The ski touring is back after a complicated season 2020 / 2021. The Verdon, although synonymous with turquoise water and canoeing, is also the Southern Alps with a few resorts such as La Foux d’Allos, PraLoup.
First thing to remember, ski touring, not to be confused with cross-country skiing and Alpine skiing, has for principle to go up the mountain to come down in a totally wild setting. It is to discover the mountain in its simplest form.
In general, the material is similar to that of Alpine skiing (or downhill skiing) with a few differences:
- The boots: they look like those of the ski slope but are lighter. Moreover, they are mobile in the upward position and locked in the downward position.
- The skis and bindings for touring: again, if the skis are the same as for downhill skiing in parabolic version but much lighter. The bindings allow to fix or release the back of the boot depending on the ascent or descent.
- The safety kit: snow shovel, ARD (Avalanche rescue device) and probe.
- All ski touring skiers never leave without this safety kit which will allow to rescue a skier in case of snow flow.
